Now through March 1, the Metropolitan Museum of Art is displaying over 90 pieces of jewelry from American artist Andrew Calder. Best known for his playful mobiles, Calder’s jewelry is full of movement, boldness, and energy. Although these pieces were created in the 1940s and 50s, their statement-making style feels fresh, fun, and exciting for today’s fashion-forward movers and shakers.

From Roundhouse Design Collaborative, here’s the answer to the age-old baby-wailing-in-public problem: “Oh Plah!” (French for “Here you go!”), a fashion-forward cuff bracelet for mom that baby can safely play with as a toy or teether. Made from medical-grade thermoplastic, “Oh Plah!” is non-toxic, bacteria resistant, and free of lead, latex, PVC, BPA, and phthalates. No small parts means it’s safe for even the tiniest babes. As if that weren’t hip enough, Roundhouse will pay to have your “Oh Plah!” shipped back to be recycled into new products when you’re finished with it. This cool cuff comes in so many bright, fun colors you just might want to wear one even if your kids are in college.

7 Carats Down the Tubes

January 25, 2009

They say a diamond is a girl’s best friend, but for Eureka, CA, native Allison Berry, turns out a plumber is a girl’s best friend. Allison accidentally flushed her $78,000, 7-carat engagement ring down the toilet of the Black Bear Diner in Phoenix, AZ, where she and her fiance were vacationing on January 14. When city workers failed to flush the ring out of the system, it was Mr. Rooter to the rescue. Mike Roberts of the Mr. Rooter plumbing services franchise snaked a tiny video camera equipped with an infrared light 125 feet down the plumbing line in search of the precious jewel. After 8 hours of snaking, jack-hammering, and pipe removal, the ring was recovered at last. The bill for Mr. Rooter’s services came to $5,200, on top of a $1,000 bill for city services. Ms. Berry and her fiance also tipped Roberts and his technician $400 each, tipped the diner employee who stayed late $200, and paid another $250 to retile the diner’s bathroom.

Cheers to You, Mrs. O!

January 21, 2009

Michelle Obama continued her bold and exciting jewelry style statements last night at the inaugural balls, choosing to sparkle in the spotlight with Loree Rodkin baubles: long, dramatic diamond drops, a collection of thin, slinky diamond wrist bangles, and an attention-getting diamond cocktail ring. The varied shapes and textures in the drop earrings perfectly complimented the assymetrical lines and sparkly beading of her white, one-shoulder gown by up-and-coming New York designer Jason Wu (who was as surprised as the rest of us to see the First Lady appear on television wearing his gown). Michelle Obama’s inaugural night gown marks a departure from the traditional First-Lady fare: top designers, high necklines, and long sleeves. All in one swoop, she brought a little-known designer (who likely has zero marketing budget) into the national spotlight, and (gasp) showed the world she’s got great shoulders. Can a fresh take on our nation’s priorities be far behind? [Photos by Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images]
