Fun in the Sun

Jewelry designer Delfina Delettrez (descendent of the Fendi family) has turned her attention to changing the way we think about sunglasses. She took four of Alain Mikli’s original acetate frames and let her imagination run wild, adding spiders and frogs that creep along the frames and unique eyewear “piercings.” My personal favorite: the Link Style collection that replaces the temple pieces with multiple chains made of sterling silver, gold, or leather, with colorful charms as a finishing touch. Just wrap them around your ears and the charms will dangle down like earrings. Two-for-one fun in the sun!

From Village to Vogue

Now through July 19, The Brooklyn Museum of Art is showcasing the work of Arthur Smith (1917-1982), one of the leading modernist jewelry designers of the twentieth century. Art Smith’s jewelry is bold and dynamic, and although the look is often massive, his pieces are lightweight and wearable. The exhibition jewelry dates from the 1940s to the 1970s and includes his most famous pieces, such as a “Patina” necklace inspired by the mobiles of Alexander Calder, a “Lava” cuff that extends over the whole lower arm in undulating and overlapping forms, and a ring with three semi-precious stones that stretches over three fingers. In addition to the jewelry, the exhibit features artist’s sketches, the original sign from Smith’s Greenwich Village shop, tools, and period photographs.

Tiny Treasures

Most children have at least one occasion in their lives that calls for dressing their very best, whether it’s their own christening, a family portrait, first communion, a bat mitzvah or bar mitzvah, or the invitation to be part of a bridal party. For these most formal rites of passage, very special pieces of jewelry can honor family or religious traditions and mark the importance of taking part in ceremony. A luminous pearl bracelet, a tie clip accented with a small diamond, a delicate cross or Star of David pendant can be the start of a new tradition in your family. Pieces such as these “Little Big Faith” pendants from Alex Woo may even become heirlooms handed down for generations to come.

Initial Reaction

The initial pendant trend comes around every so often, but this time it’s back in a whole new way. Sure, there are a wider variety of styles to choose from, ranging from clean and simple to gothic to ultra feminine scrollwork, such as this intricate “A” from Sara Blaine . But the real news this time around is in how initial pendants are being worn. If you already have an initial pendant in your jewerly box, add beads or charms to give it a whole new “clustered” look. And instead of wearing just your own initial, personalize your look even further by layering on your husband’s or children’s initials, adding your birthstone or astrological symbol, or spelling out words that have special meaning to you.
