Anita Briem piled on Coomi’s bangles for the world premier of Journey to the Center of the Earth in Los Angeles on June 29. Her layered look made a fun, flirtatious statement as she waved from the runway, continuing a trend that’s been jingling all summer long and will jangle into the fall.

Announcing a whole new collectible category for fine jewelry, auction house Phillips de Pury presents “Hip Hop’s Crown Jewels.” The sale will be held on October 1, featuring 50 iconic cultural artifacts worn by some of the 20th Century’s most influential musical artists including 50 Cent, Biz Markie, MC Lyte, Missy Elliot, Notorious B.I.G., P. Diddy, Slick Rick, and Tupac Shakur. The prize for biggest bling goes to Lil Jon’s “Crunk Ain’t Dead” necklace. Weighing in at almost 12 pounds, this attention-getter holds the Guinness World’s Record for largest diamond pendant necklace. A portion of the proceeds from the “Crown Jewels” auction will benefit three nonprofits within Russell Simmons’s Rush Community Affairs.

Sweet Releaf

September 12, 2008

From the “Feel Good While You Look Good” Department: At Tina Tang, every jewelry purchase plants a tree. So far over 15,000 trees have been planted through her partnership with American Forests, a nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring and enhancing the natural capital of trees and forests.

“I thought about a lot of causes before I picked this one,” says Tang. “I realized that without the earth we can’t have all the other causes that are so important. We need to take care of the planet first.”

Each of her Releaf necklaces plants at least 40 trees. The front displays a simple olive branch design, and the back is engraved with Tang’s environmental philosophy: Peace, Love, Recycle.

With the price of precious metals rising higher every day, more designers are thinking “negative space” as they create pieces that give a bigger look for less. Try a light, airy cuff made of delicately woven gold, like this gossamer confection by Barry Kronen. His Noveau Lace Collection offers ultra-feminine looks in 18k yellow, white, or rose gold sprinkled with dewdrops of sparkling diamonds.
