Whether you’re stepping out with gal pals to see the latest Twilight flick or strolling through the moonlight with your very own Edward Cullen, go a little goth with jewelry that’s as dark as it is delicious. Designer Jennifer Trask magically mixes bits of raw nature with precious gems and metals to create spellbinding works of art. Her list of materials reads like a recipe for a witch’s brew: snake vertebrae, dragonfly wings, deer bones, glass fish and reptile eyes, snake skin, and sea urchin shells. Her otherworldly jewels often hold startling surprises: branches of gold, silver, or delicately wrought iron bear fruit of bone or seeds of stone, or even sprout fish-eye blossoms that return your gaze!

Rough meets refined in a stunning new collection that puts a little polish on rough colored diamonds. Designer Tamara Goldfiner of Rahaminov Diamonds presents the Kifani Collection of distinctively shaped rough diamonds that harken back to ancient times, when these entrancing gems were lauded as fragments of stars and the tears of gods. Tamara’s twist on an ancient tradition gives today’s jewelry lovers the delightful contradiction of wearing something that’s at the same time luxurious and humble—a delicious secret for those in the know.

Lenora Dame’s bold-spirited Bohemian Collection is bound to bring out your inner gypsy. Textiles, wood, glass, resin, and found objects come together in an eclectic mix of vintage and new. Lenora’s fabric-covered bead necklace gives earthy colors a hip twist with retro prints. A trio of silk dupioni-wrapped bangles coordinate just enough without being too matchy-matchy.

Jeffrey Levin, an artisan jewelry designer originally from Capetown, South Africa, has just launched the Jeffrey Levin Ndu Collection, street-style-meets-tribal-trend jewelry handcrafted in sterling silver, rose gold, and black diamonds. The name “ndu” (pronounced “en-du”), comes from the languages of the Ndebele tribes of Zimbabwe and the northern and eastern provinces of South Africa. The beautiful bangle shown here features carved tribal motifs inspired by the bold, geometric shapes Ndebele women paint on their houses to celebrate their sons’ coming of age. Jeffrey’s urban take on his African heritage will effortlessly give an elegant yet edgy vibe to even the simplest looks, whether you’re heading off to a workday on Wall Street or an evening of dancing in the streets.

Paula Crevoshay

July 30, 2009

Paula Crevoshay isn’t known as the “Queen of Color” for nothing. She fearlessly combines the exotic with the completely unexpected to create pieces that are as inventive as they are breathtaking. Even Paula’s most delicate designs can carry a hidden meaning. This stunning pendant featuring a divine orchid formed with whisper-pink kunzite set against purple and pink sapphires may look delicate, but orchids themselves are tough and resilient and can live for hundreds of years. Although they’re found the world over, they remain an extremely rare and exotic find. Just like Paula herself.
