Fresh Gems: Jewels
Amazing Catch
August 6, 2009
This magnificent Elsa Peretti® pendant has the feeling of fabulous finds—stone, silk, pearl—discovered in her travels to exotic places and shaped into wearable art. A 135-carat rubellite is the enchanting captive of a silk net created by master artisans in Kyoto, Japan. Finely woven threads crisscross the stone’s polished contours and flow into a great tassel of texture and movement. Accented with a Tahitian pearl, the pendant celebrates Elsa Peretti’s elegant simplicity and her creative use of centuries-old crafts. Photo courtesy of Tiffany & Co.

Tanzanite Fascination
July 24, 2009
There’s only one place in the world to find the mesmerizing deep blue-violet colored gemstone tanzanite, featured here in this fabulous brooch by Ruth Grieco. This rare and coveted gem was discovered in the East African state of Tanzania, where in 1967 a Maasai tribesman caught the glint of an unusual translucent blue stone shimmering in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. Maasai chiefs give pieces of tanzanite to their wives upon the birth of a new baby, to symbolize a healthy and positive life for their children. It’s also given as an heirloom to celebrate this generation, since the supply of tanzanite is scarce and will likely run out by the time this generation has children of their own. Whether you wear tanzanite to celebrate the birth of a child, a new beginning in your life, or your own unique vibrancy and individuality, tanzanite’s velvety colorplay will always have a magical aura that fascinates.

A Golden Egg
January 14, 2009
The goose that laid the golden egg had nothing on this beauty—
a $2 million jeweled egg featuring yellow gold, platinum, and 3,000 diamonds and rubies. Stanislav Kaufman, a jeweler with the San Francisco-based Van Craeynest firm, spent 12 years creating this once-in-a-lifetime treasure. “I had always dreamed of doing something like a Faberge’ [egg],” says Soviet-born Kaufman. “I call this The American Egg because it is made in America.”
