Fresh Gems: Red Carpet
Loki Remembered
March 7, 2009
A few weeks before the Oscars, actor Mickey Rourke mourned the loss of Loki, his 17-year-old Chihuahua and constant red-carpet companion. Jewelry designer Betina Wasserman knew just how he felt. A few months prior, she had lost her own Chinese Crested pooch named Igor. Wasserman decided to reach out to the actor with a comforting gesture—by giving him one of her own handmade double-sided pendants featuring Loki. Imagine her surprise when the actor called her personally to thank her, and then her complete shock to see him wearing the necklace at both the Independent Spirit Awards and…the Oscars! Before Rourke’s attention, the designer had only sold eight pices of jewelry through her Etsy.com boutique, Wicked World. Now, she’s enlisted the help of friends and family to keep up with all the orders. If you’d like a custom-made pendant of your own, send Betina two photos and she’ll mount them back-to-back between two pieces of microscope-slide glass soldered with silvergleem, a lead-free solder. Each pendant costs $30 and takes 3-4 weeks for delivery. “I work full-time and do all this myself,” explains Betina. “But trust me, it will be worth the wait!”

Amy Adams
February 28, 2009
Long live the statement necklace! Second on my Oscars “love it!” list (next to Angelina’s eye-popping emeralds) is Best Supporting Actress Nominee Amy Adams’s emerald, ruby, and sapphire vintage Fred Leighton bib necklace from the 1950s. It was so refreshing to see a rainbow of gemstones on the otherwise lovely but safe red carpet. Hooray for the tutti-fruittiness of it all!

Wonder what Hollywood’s most talented women in film and television were gifted in their goody bags? Cosmetic company L’Oreal Paris teamed up with fine jewelry house Carelle to create big, bold, and deliciously fun fine diamond and colored gemstone good-luck gifts for the Golden Globes, Sundance Film Festival, Screen Actor’s Guild Awards, Academy Awards, and Tribeca Film Festival. The 2009 Red Carpet Compact Collection features different combinations of gems designed to bring on a sense of calm and woo good luck vibes. One of each of the limited-edition designs is on sale now through eBay Giving Works, with all proceeds benefiting the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund.

Angelina’s Emeralds
February 23, 2009
And the Oscar for best eye-candy on the red carpet goes to…..Angelina Jolie and her out-of-this world emerald drop earrings and gumball-sized emerald cocktail ring, both from jeweler-to-the-stars Lorraine Schwartz. The burst of juicy color was absolutely electric on camera and perfectly set off her chic and simple Elie Saab strapless black gown.

White Hot
January 12, 2009
I nearly went snowblind from all the spectacular white gowns popping off the red carpet at the 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards. The bling was no less blinding, as celebs marked the return of the Golden Globes (after last year’s cancellation due to the writer’s strike) with old-school Hollywood glamour. Two starlets shone the brightest in my opinion, each with her own spectacular take on accessorizing a classic white look. Eva Mendes topped off her strapless white silk taffeta Dior gown with a stunning Van Cleef & Arpels “Panka” necklace circa 1974, featuring 132 blue turquoise teardrops and 36.06 carats of diamonds set in 18K yellow gold. And Beyonce was an absolute vison in a silver-sequined ivory Elie Saab Couture gown perfectly paired with a 200-carat looped diamond fringe collar and diamond drop earrings from Lorraine Schwartz. Now that’s what we tune in to see!
